Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has said that the club are still capable of winning both the Premier league and the Europa league this season to make a historic double. Nothing from England has won both the Premier league and the Europa league in the same season, even though many clubs have won the Premier league and the UEFA cup. The present version of the UEFA cup – Europa league – is yet to be won by an English club. Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has said that the Old Trafford club are looking to become the first English club to achieve this double.

Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League this season at the group stages. Wayne Rooney has said that the prestige for Manchester United will not lower as a result of competing in the Europa league. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson earlier appeared to suggest that it was disgrace for Manchester United to play in the Europa league, although he had retracted from making such comments later. Wayne Rooney, though, has said that the Europa league is a great competition and that Manchester United will be playing at their best in order to win the competition.

Manchester United still have 13 games in the Premier league and currently in the second position in the table. They are two points behind leaders Manchester City. “I’ve no concerns about it hindering our progress in the league, not at all. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this competition. It’s a new challenge for all of us. There’s no point being in a competition if you aren’t going to try and win it and the manager has shown he is going to put out strong teams,” Wayne Rooney said ahead of the tie with Ajax in the Europa league.
