Wayne Rooney Would Be Great for the MLS Claims Portland Timbers Owner
The MLS is expected to be one of the destinations for Wayne Rooney once he enters into the latter stages of his career.
The 31-year-old is still at the peak of his powers and may carry on playing for Manchester United at least for the next couple of years. However, the MLS clubs have already begun the process of wooing the superstar to North America. Recently, Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson claimed that the striker would be a great addition to the league. Only recently, Major League Soccer has seen rapid expansion in terms of big-money moves.
The likes of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard have all come from the Premier league after having achieved immense success. Rooney has also experienced a success of equal nature and he is one of the popular players throughout the world. Bringing the England international to the MLS will provide the league with an even bigger publicity. However, signing Rooney will be easier said than done since the 31-year-old is expected to attract a lot of big-money offers from China, Middle East, and potentially Brazil. The presence of Englishmen like Gerrard and Lampard, though, could help MLS attract more English stars in the coming years.
“I would argue he still has some good soccer ahead of him. I think he would be a great signing for MLS – 100 percent MLS would be attractive for him.Keeping in mind that is a very talented footballer, who has quality soccer ahead of him, you are not talking about a 34 or 35 year old. I get excited about the impact he would have in the MLS more than a guy who is coming in later in his career,” saidPaulson. The club recently also brought in Italian striker Giovinco, who is now the second highest paid player in MLS after Brazilian superstar Kaka.
