Rooney Doubtful
Manchester United star man Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for the match against Newcastle United. Wayne Rooney was injured in the 2-2 draw with Benfica in the group stages of the Champions League. Now, he is a major doubt for the weekends match in which Manchester United host Newcastle United. This is going to be an extremely important match given that Newcastle United are flying high in the top of the title, although they recently suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Manchester United’s neighbours Manchester City.
United were extremely disappointing in the home match against Benfica, although they scored two goals. The two goals that they conceded now means that they face an uphill task to finish the group as winners. They must take at least one point against FC Basel in the final group match to have any chance of qualifying at all. Speaking ahead of the match against Newcastle United, Sir Alex Ferguson said, “We will wait and give him every chance – we did for todays match, but he wasn’t really fit enough, so we’ll just have to continue to wait. We’ll see what he’s like over the coming few days.”
Consolation for Sir Alex Ferguson comes in the form of Dimitar Berbatov, who scored in Europe for the first time in over a year against Benfica. His goal helped Manchester United level the match after Phil Jones had scored an own goal. Darren Fletcher scored the other goal for Manchester United to give them the lead, but Benfica equalised through Pablo Aimar to give them a great chance of making it into the knockout stages of the Champions League. Even if they do not finish as the winners, they have a great chance of qualifying.
