IRON GRIP
The England striker Wayne Rooney has said that Manchester United will be able to take an iron grip on the title if they do well in the final few matches of the year. Manchester United will be involved in three matches before the end of 2012. Rooney has said that these seven days could prove to be the difference between United winning and losing the title. He has said that United will be able to get a stranglehold on the title race if they manage to take nine points from this period. United are coming to the matches with a six-point advantage over second placed Manchester city.
However, the six-point advantage was reduced to just four points after United could manage only a 1-1 draw with Swansea during the weekend. Rooney was one of the disappointing players for United in the match against Swansea, but the striker has admitted that there are some days when he cannot perform well up to his high standard. However, he has promised that he will do everything he can to return to form as soon as possible. United will be taking on Newcastle United at home on Boxing Day followed by the away trip to Wigan Athletic after the turn of the year.
“With football over Christmas, you have a game every few days. It means there is a big chance to really kick on if you get results. With the position we are in at the moment it is a great opportunity to try and make that gap even bigger. Unfortunately we couldn’t do that on Sunday, but we have two home games and hopefully we can get six points out of them,” said Rooney ahead of the Newcastle match. Rooney has not been prolific in terms of scoring, but he has contributed a lot of assists.
